ABOUT ANTIGONE

What happens when a single person stands up to resist oppression? Based on the ancient Greek tragedy of Antigone, the story of a daughter in a powerful family tries to bury her brother’s corpse against the dictates of her uncle Creon. The Penn Theatre Arts Program production will explore Antigone’s journey as she takes a stand against oppression through a simple but radical act. Set in a not-so-distant Riot Grrrl future, join us as we consider resistance, oppression, the tragedy and divisiveness of war, and the power of finding your voice.

Rehearsal and Performance Schedule

All cast members must be able to register for THAR3500 (see below) which will meet on Wednesdays from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm throughout the fall semester. Students should also plan to be called to later afternoon or evening rehearsals in addition to the scheduled class time (exact dates and times provided at auditions), and should be free during Tech week (11/11 – 11/14 and 11/16 - 11/17), Performance week (11/19 – 11/24), and strike (11/24).

About Theatre Arts 3500 (a credit-bearing course)

Theatre Arts 3500: Rehearsal and Performance is designed to provide students with deep intellectual and artistic immersion in the theatrical process through intensive research, rehearsal, and performance of a full-length stage piece. Students may enroll in this course as actors through audition, or as stage managers through interview.

Students who are offered acting roles or stage management roles will be required to register for THAR3500. The course meets on Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 6:30pm and provides 1 CU, which will count towards your course limit for the semester.

Interested in production and technical roles?

Stage managers, scenery and props build, props head, wardrobe, running crew, are some of the commonly available roles. Some production roles will require registration in THAR 3500, some will require different schedules including rehearsals and/or tech week and performances, still other roles will instead require weekly daytime availability. Students interested in production and technical roles should contact Cat Johnson, Production Coordinator at catj@sas.upenn.edu.
