About this workshop: The playwright writes language to be swallowed, absorbed by bodies and released back into space on breath, the new world enacted. In a play, language is active, a blueprint for what Happens: it leaves space for encounter. In this class, we will explore the potential of text as nutrition for the transformative theatrical encounter. More simply, this is a class for anyone interested in writing plays or text for performance. We will read plays by writers who have pushed the form, do in class exercises, and write short plays. No previous experience is required.
Workshop dates: This workshop will meet over three sessions—5-10pm on January 27, February 10, and February 17—on the Penn campus. The workshop is free, noncredit, and open to all members of the Philadelphia writing community; you do not need to be affiliated with Penn to join.
About the instructor: Casey Llewellyn is a writer and theater maker whose work interrogates identity, collectivity and form. Her 2016 play O, Earth (The Foundry Theatre) was nominated for Best New Play in the Off Broadway Alliance Awards. Other works for theatre include: The Body Which Is the Town, Zaide!, Obsession Piece, The Quiet Way, Existing Conditions (cowritten with Claudia Rankine), and I Love Dick, an adaptation for theater of the book by Chris Kraus. Her essay “What We Could Do With Writing” appears in The Racial Imaginary: Writers on Race in the Life of the Mind edited by Claudia Rankine, Beth Loffreda, and Max King Cap.
