Auditions! Spring Mainstage Production and Penn Plays Project

Auditions for Theatre Arts spring production of The Eumenides, directed by Dr. Marcia Ferguson, will take place on Tuesday, December 1 and Thursday, December 3, from 6pm-10pm in Annenberg Center for Performing Arts room 511. 

The Eumenides is the third play in Aeschylus’ great masterpiece, the Oresteia trilogy. By special arrangement, this production will be performed in the extraordinary Penn Museum of Archeology and Anthropology, and will be produced in collaboration with the Theatre Arts Artistic Resident for 2016, Sebastienne Mundheim/White Box Theatre, and the Penn Department of Anthropology.   It will feature original music by composer Patrick Lamborn, and actors with musical talents are accordingly especially encouraged to audition.  Please be in touch with Marcia Ferguson directly (marciaf@english.upenn.edu) if you are interested in auditioning, but can’t come to the stated audition times.

 

Summary: At the behest of his sister Electra and the god Apollo, Orestes has murdered his mother, Clytemnestra, wife and murderer in turn of his father, the late Agamemnon. As a consequence, Orestes finds himself tormented and relentlessly pursued by the terrible Furies, hideous ancient goddesses of the underworld, who are divinely charged with punishing matricides.  Finding temporary refuge as a supplicant in Athena’s temple, he is subjected to divine - and, in this earliest representation of democratic order, civic - judgement, which only enrages the Furies further.

Steve is visiting his girlfriend, Kat, on the other side of the country, and discovers he maybe should not be there.  Awkward.  Then he meets Becca, and things get clearer.  A fast paced, sharp tongued look at how our relationships shape us - if we let them. 

 

Cast of Characters

 

Steve: Opinionated. Rough around the edges.

Kat: Moved far away to discover herself.

*Becca: A light in a dark valley. Knows exactly who she is.

Christopher: Hustling. Means well. Thinks he’s smarter than he is.

 

*The director is interested in the woman playing Becca being a singer/songwriter/guitar person.
