Latin American and Latinx Theatre and Performance
Come explore how Latinx and Latin American theatre artists are innovating and reimagining art, politics, and society.
In this course we will explore a wide range of theatrical practice emerging from across Latin America and from Latinx communities in the US. Our focus will be on understanding the vibrant panorama of contemporary practice by placing it within a wider historical, hemispheric trajectory.
We will consider performances ranging from Broadway theatre to radical protest performance, underground theatre, and mass market music by artists such as Las Yeguas del Apocalipsis, Calle 13, Augusto Boal, Sabina Berman, Teatro Campesino, Carmelita Tropicana, Quiara AlegrÃa Hudes, and Lin Manuel Miranda. We will read and view performances as well as experiment with rehearsal techniques on our feet. Students will be given the option to complete a written research project or develop a creative response for their final assessment.
