ADVANCED ACTING AND DIRECTING LAB: JAPANESE THEATER THEORY AND PRACTICE

THAR 321.301

instructor(s):
2pm-5pm Friday

The primary goal of the course is to invite you into an intellectual and physical investigation into several forms of Japanese Theatre: Noh, Kyogen, Kabuki, and Contemporary Experimental Theater.  I cannot teach you how to perform these theatrical forms (as I am not a “master” or from a “family” that holds the secrets to the art), but together we can develop and explore a practice that allows us to engage the traditional Japanese plays in the spirit and style of the performer who created the original performances. We will approach this learning through understanding Japanese Theatre in a historical context, a theoretical context and through a practice (physical context).  We will work together to create a performance and training methodology to better enable us to inhabit the plays.

The classes will be divided each day into a discussion/lecture section and a performance/training section.
