The Heidi Chronicles

a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Wendy Wasserstein

Directed by  Dr. Rosemary Malague

Performance Dates:

Thursday, February 19 – Saturday, February 21, 2015

Harold Prince Theatre,  Annenberg Center for Performing Arts.

Funny and bittersweet, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning comedy traces the journey of the “baby boomer” generation through the character of Heidi, “a brilliant feminist art historian trying to keep her bearings and her sense of humor on the elevator ride from the radical sixties to the heartless eighties.” This 20th century play has surprising resonance at this moment in the 21st century (see it at Penn before its Broadway revival later this spring!).

Fefu is an unusual woman.  Her daily rifle shots at her husband have so far not managed to kill him - or their relationship.  She gathers her women friends together for a weekend of water play, philosophy, bourbon ice cubes, gender politics, and argument.  Is wheelchair-bound Julia a prophet?  Will Celia kiss Paula?  Will Fefu ever hit her mark?  Audiences, who travel from scene to scene in random order, piece together their own experiences of the powerful mysteries at the heart of this play, and come to their own conclusions.   Susan Sontag called Obie award-winning Fefu and her Friends (1977) "a wonderful, important play."  Explore Maria Irene Fornes' unforgettable dream-world, and find out why.
